The human literature is extremely thin, with case reports, small case series, anecdotal reports, and limited observational studies rather than randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid derived from the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga , a plant found primarily in West Central Africa. Accounts of what ibogaine therapy means often begin with its history in traditional African medicine, particularly in Gabon, but historical use does not establish modern safety or therapeutic effects. Interest centers on addiction treatment, opioid withdrawal, depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, and other mental health conditions. Yet the current clinical evidence does not show that repeated low doses reliably improve patient outcomes, remission rates, or long-term effects compared with established treatment.
